The Legend of JulieA Tale of Julie, the ghost from the Bottom of the Cup Tea Room...
According to legend, Julie lived at 732 Royal Street during the early 1800s. She was an octoroon, who is a person of mixed race, part black and part white. The mixed race women of New Orleans were famous for their beauty, and wealthy white men would enter into domestic arrangements with these women, basically buying exclusive rights to them. This was known as placage, and it was very much a business deal, with the women's family or former patron receiving a finder's fee and the woman receiving a house and maintenance for her and whatever children might result from the union. Julie was part of such an arrangement. The house on Royal Street was part of her contract with a wealthy French man. It is believed that the two of them were genuinely in love and that love is what sealed Julie's doom.
