A Rougarou (pronounced roo ga roo) is a kind of werewolf in the Cajun folklore of Louisiana. The Rougarou is described as a creature with a human body and the head of a wolf or dog, similar to the werewolf legend. The legends say that the creature prowls the Louisiana swamps and that the Rougarou is under a spell for 101 days. After that time, the curse is transferred from person to person when the Rougarou draws another human’s blood. During the day the creature returns to human form. Although acting sickly, the human refrains from telling others of the situation for fear of being killed.
I can remember when I was a kid my Mom would tell me that if I was bad the Rougarou would get me..wonder if that's what lead to so many of my childhood fears!
I'm now living in a place where I have a swamp as my back yard and I must admit that sometimes I get a little creeped out at night when I look through my window on a full moon, especially when the dogs are howling! It's easy to imagine something creeping towards my home...Gee Thanks Mom!
It can get pretty creepy..It's better now but when I first moved here almost 5 years ago, my imagination was working overtime.. I'd swear there were ghosties and rougarous behind every moss laden cyprus tree!
I call one of our dogs Rougarou when she is being a PITA!! lol
